 Wildflowers by Helen Stubbs

The bright purple and white flowers swayed tantalizingly

on their perch on the riverbank.

Kate points from our boat and calls them to our attention,

“We should grab some for mom like last time!”

Rob ties the bowline to the closest sturdy log he can find,

While Kate steadies herself to jump out.

Lito jumps into the muddy dirt without hesitation,

Collecting clumps of soil on his paws as he sniffs the air.

Kate, unfortunately, does not stick the landing as Lito did,

Slipping and finding soft mud to pad her landing and coat her hands and knees.

Rob is the one to climb the steep bank, clutching his handy knife

To earn the wild purple and white flowers;

Mom’s favorite colors
