Caught in a Flash
“Caught in a Flash” by Cariyanna Washington
Reminded how that day was.
The day that shouldn’t be remembered.
Tears felt like heavy rain was coming.
Cars were all seen in that quick flash.
All in a second.
The morning was so chilly; Felt like winter came early.
The morning felt how a room would feel with the AC on.
Car window was fogged; Good representation of morning weather.
It showed how everyone was in shock by the news that day.
Father was hesitant to deliver the news.
Mother tried to cover up with a distraction.
Remember how crushed it was; How the heart just fell towards the stomach.
It was another piece gone.
Sad wasn’t the word. Broken wasn’t the word either. Just miserable.
Father hid the emotions til the day they said goodbye.
Brother was trembling.
Mother tried to hold her own.
It wasn’t sticking that it happened.
Others came to wish their goodbyes.
Mother held and wished that it'll be alright.
Father's words were beautiful.
Others spoke about the good memories.
Still couldn’t believe the news.
Weeks passed and the missing pieces were hard to fill.
Emotions were different.
Mood swings.
Wished he was there to comfort me.
Lost a piece that I was finally getting comfortable with.
Lost a piece of heart that wanted to see success fly.
Remembered how he laughed and joked about father.
Remembered how he made fun of the way brother sat in the game.
He would always support the decisions.
Never had a doubt.
Now it's just doubt there.
Wishing upon a star.
Return him please.
Knowing there’s no coming back home.
There’s this shadow watching.
Like it’s him standing there.
Maybe it’s just paranoia.
Now it’s just an urn there.
Full of ashes.
Kiss them goodnight.
Still a missing piece; so quiet.
Father hides emotions by working.
Just like he did.
