Animals of The Savanna by Josefina Eggelston

Teachers always said to be the giraffe in the field of zebras

But they never told me that my neck would be cut off

When they said giraffe what they really meant was tall zebra

Because a tall zebra may be strange but it is still a zebra

And a giraffe can't be a zebra even if they paint themself

No matter how they paint themself

Because a tall zebra may prefer leaves over grasses but a giraffe

A giraffe is difficult it needs more it needs different

And it's in the zebras home so what can it do

It will try to be a zebra and hate being a giraffe

But it will never be a zebra and it will never fully accept that

Because in the same breath that they are told it’s ok to be a giraffe

They are told their neck should be shorter and they should have stripes
